The subjunctive
Sample lesson, B2 grammarThe rule
After doubt, emotion, necessity or will (il faut que, je doute que, je veux que), the second verb shifts into the subjunctive. The action is not a fact, it is a wish, a fear or a requirement.
In practice
Il faut que tu fasses tes devoirs.
Not "tu fais". It is not a statement of fact, it is a requirement. The mood carries the meaning, not just the tense.
The mistake almost everyone makes
Memorising the conjugations without learning the triggers. Students conjugate perfectly and still say the wrong thing after penser que, which takes the indicative.
Then you use it
We write five sentences about your own week: one wish, one doubt, one requirement. We keep going until the trigger and the mood come without thinking.
